Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT learn on their own or gain new skills without explicit instruction, according to a study published in the proceedings of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics. This finding challenges fears about AI posing an existential threat to humanity.
Researchers from the University of Bath and the Technical University of Darmstadt conducted the study. They found that while LLMs excel at following instructions and using language, they can’t master new skills independently. This limitation means these AI systems remain controllable and predictable.
Dr. Harish Tayyar Madabushi, a computer scientist at the University of Bath and co-author of the study, explained, “The prevailing narrative that this type of AI is a threat to humanity prevents the widespread adoption and development of these technologies, and also diverts attention from the genuine issues that require our focus.”
Debunking the Myth of AI’s ‘Emergent Abilities’
The research team ran thousands of experiments to test LLMs’ ability to complete unfamiliar tasks. They found that the models’ apparent understanding of social situations, for example, stems from their capacity for “in-context learning” (ICL) – the ability to perform tasks based on a few examples – rather than genuine comprehension.
This discovery contradicts previous assumptions about LLMs developing complex reasoning skills as they grow larger. Dr. Tayyar Madabushi noted, “Our study shows that the fear that a model will go away and do something completely unexpected, innovative and potentially dangerous is not valid.”
Professor Iryna Gurevych, who led the research at the Technical University of Darmstadt, emphasized that while their results don’t mean AI poses no threats at all, they demonstrate that fears about the emergence of complex thinking skills in these models are unfounded.
The study’s findings have significant implications for AI development and regulation. Dr. Tayyar Madabushi cautioned against premature regulations based on perceived existential threats, suggesting instead that focus should be placed on addressing existing potential misuses of AI, such as the creation of fake news and increased fraud risks.
